Math Department Computer Lab

education as well as when they leave LACC.

- Computer skills are fundamental elements of success for our students during their years of education as well as when they leave LACC.

- Computer-aided instruction is a tool, not a goal unto itself, which can provide instructors a wider range of options for offering quality instruction when integrated into the curriculum.

- Each LACC student should have access to knowledgeable resources able to assist in the education process.

- Custom programs developed within the lab must be developed in concert with faculty in order ensure that students will receive the greatest benefit.

- The lab is not only for remedial students, but is designed to offer all students access to resources which can improve their mathematical aptitude.

- Use of the lab to complete on-line mathematics courses enhances the level of service which LACC is able to offer its students.

- Each of the various groups of lab users, including remedial students, advanced students and those using the lab to complete on-line coursework, has an equally valid claim to the resources available.

It is the vision of the LACC math lab to provide an environment in which math skills of all levels, from remedial to advanced, can be mastered through one-on-one instruction as well as through computer-aided instruction and on-line courses. Technology forms an important part of the LACC lab in that computers are used extensively to reinforce work that students are doing in their courses. The Mathematica software, chosen for its ease of use and reported effectiveness, offers students structured learning at a self-imposed pace which removes much of the math anxiety from which students often suffer.

However, computers alone cannot teach students, and the lab is intended to be integrated with individual courses (through faculty input and participation) as well as with the Pi Shop, a remedial course and tutoring resource availabl...
