Aspects of Residential Construction

concrete improves a structure's seismic response. This feature makes concrete a more attractive material in the western states.

Integration of extruded polymer materials that act as finished wall panels and concrete forming molds also creates a system that minimizes the amount of labor needed to build a house, while maximizing its strength.

Most plastic construction materials is for nonstructural or cosmetic applications. In replacing wood products, these materials offer some functional advantages, such as increased thermal efficiency, fire resistance, and durability. Contemporary thermoplastic roof panels, as an example, can be installed in one-third less time, resist mildew, and will not rot.

Another innovation in residential is the implementation of the practice of sustainable construction. Sustainable construction uses methods and materials that do not deplete natural resources, that are safe, and that are light-enhancing. The primary material used is a mineralized wood fiber that is filled with concrete. Among the energy efficiencies incorporated into sustainable construction are a heating system fueled by energy from the hot water heater, large overhangs and a porch for shade, a metal roof with a radiant barrier to decrease attic heating, and ceiling fans.

There are both advantages and disadvantages associated with both traditional sawn wood and alternative products for use in farming for residential construction. The environmental impact of structural materials is another key factor driving the search for building alternatives, as architects and builders consider the environmental effects of lumber milling.

Engineered lumber·including laminated-veneer lumber, wood I-joists, glue-laminated beams, and oriented-strand board·is one of the most popular of the newer framing alternatives to sawn lumber. Engineered lumber components are manufactured from weaker tree fibers, such as aspen and poplar. The wo...
