Q. Do these two products exhibit biogenic, psychogenic or a combination of these qualities? Products fill needs. Some needs are biogenic meaning they arise from biological conditions. For example, hunger, thirst, and discomfort all produce needs. Some needs are psychogenic. These needs arise from our psychological condition. The desire for status or acceptance can produce needs that feel just as powerful as biogenic ones. Many needs are both biogenic and psychogenic.

A psychogenic need is one that arises from the individual's psychological condition. A psychogenic need is a need arising from a psychological condition such as the desire to look attractive, the desire to be popular, or the desire to appear prosperous. Many consumption decisions are attempts to satisfy psychogenic needs. In some instance, mood swings and emotional states necessitate the consumption of certain products. For example, the need for social conversation and interaction, need for affection, need to succeed, need to feel in control, need for recreation, and need to express oneself are all psychogenic needs. These games appeal to the desire to escape reality, and to defeat a powerful opponent -- and in doing so to feel that one is capable of overcoming significant obstacles.

Although these are not traditionally considered needs or physical needs, their deprivation causes near traumatic effect on the person both physically and mentally. Thus, it is reasonable to classify these psychogenic effects as needs to the extent that their minimal satisfaction is imperative rather than discretionary.
