I would measure employee attitudes using a variety of tools and techniques. One way I would evaluate employee attitudes toward the company, its products, and its strategic direction would be through direct surveys. I would also involve focus groups of employees utilizing a third party facilitator -- on the theory that workers are more likely to say what is on their minds to someone who is not part of the General Electric management team -- no matter how far removed that person might be from the focus group attendees and their work. Another way I would measure employee attitudes would be in terms of statistics about retention of employees considered valuable employees. GE can measure and monitor the number of voluntary resignations as a percent of the total workforce. This would e another way to measure employee satisfaction.

There are numerous ways that this company can measure its profitability. Each of these measurement tools is in some ways a relevant measure of the company's performance. On the income statements, General Electric could track gross profit, operating profit, pretax profit and after tax profit. GE could measure return on stockholder's investment. It could use return on assets. It could also use earnings per share as a way to measure the company's financial performance.

General Electric can easily measure market position by evaluating the worldwide market share that GE has for each of its brands or products. Market share can and should be measured on a country-by-country basis. James Hangstefer (1999) writes in Management Review that companies can measure market position by evaluating the market revenue margin.
