Real World Mathematics

An example of hands on activity using realia included the taking of Spanish students to study in Mexico; these American students were taken to Mexico to more fully understand the culture while they learned. This method was designed to help students actively engage in a meaningful relationship with a culture while learning as opposed to merely providing information to students for them to memorize. Results were mixed. Students experienced multiple reactions from getting lost to feeling homesick to the point of physical illness, however students did learn what others are going through, which increased their own learning. It was recommended that students be asked to list their own examples of realia that can be used to teach mathematics and other subjects.
