there can be no understanding of the people of African origin in the United States until there is a better understanding, and more respect for, their African background. The culture of a people is the fuel that feeds the fires of their ambition, pride and self-esteem (Clarke 5).

This sense of kinship with the third world and with blacks in Africa leads many black men to experiment with African traditions and theologies, and this in turn makes them more receptive to cultural movements like the Black Muslim Movement.
