Teaching Third-grade Mathematics

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Lesson Plan: Teach Third-grade Mathematics

This lesson plan will present instruction in mathematics, specifically how to convert fractions to decimals in money form (ie. pennies to quarters, dimes to dollars, etc.), for a district in Camden County. This instruction will be in accordance with the ESPA that will be given to the students following the year.

The district in Camden County is identified as the Cherry Hill Public Schools. This district included 19 schools (early childhood center, 12 elementary schools, 3 middle high schools, and an alternative high school program). This is the 12th largest district in New Jersey. Enrollment will top 11,500 students this year and is expected to grow. Employees number 1,300 with 950 teachers. SAT scores for the district exceed state averages; 96% of high school students passed state-mandated tests and 95% of the graduates continue at their education at colleges. The district has the goal of reducing class size, providing technology, and improving ventilation and other building systems. Student growth is attended to at the schools and beyond with extracurricular opportunities in many areas (drama, publications, ethnic culture clubs, music, etc.).

The 2001-2002 average class size for Grades 1-3 was 16.1 compared to the state average class size of 19.9. Language diversity includes 89% with English as a first language. Student faculty ratio is 15.1:1 compared to the state average of 12.3:1. Student/
