anemia, intrinsic factor is not produced by the stomach. The liver stores large amounts of vitamin B12, so pernicious anemia does not show up for two to four years after the stomach stops producing intrinsic factor.

Vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle cell anemia is caused by the blockage of small blood vessels in the spleen, kidneys, brain, bones and other organs by the sickle-shaped cells, causing a loss of oxygen supply to the affected area served by those blood vessels which are blocked (749-750). Anything that reduces the amount of oxygen in their blood will bring on a sickle cell crisis - a worsening of the anemia.
