Effects of Leptin

ere significantly lower than females and leptin levels were positively correlated with birth weight. Estradiol and testosterone levels did not differ by gender or leptin level. It was concluded that the gender differences in leptin levels were not due to body fat or reproductive hormone status but they may be due to genetic gender differences.

Blum, Englargo, Hanitsch, Juul, Hertel, Muller, Skakkebaek, Heiman, Birkett, Attanasio, Kiess, and Rascher (1997) reported that leptin effects body fat mass and is linked to hypothalamo-pituitary-endocrine feedback loops. Since childhood and puberty developmental periods include metabolic and endocrine changes, the authors examined leptin levels and hormonal levels in a study of 312 male and 401 female children/adolescents, ages 5.8 to 19.9 years. Results showed that leptin levels were increased in females but decreased in males, with changes occurring dependent on age increase. An exponential relationship was found for leptin levels with regard to body mass and body fat.
