LEADERSHIP IN THE MODERN WORLD
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This research reviews the qualities required for successful organizational leadership in the modern world. Leadership is the ability of one person to influence a group of persons toward the achievement of common goals (Yukl, 1994). When comparing leadership styles, the focus typically is on the effectiveness of leaders'. Effectiveness, in turn, typically is the extent to which the leader's group or organization performs its tasks successfully or attains its goals (Black, Morrison, & Gregersen, 1999).Pasternack, Van Nuys, and Perkins (1998) identified three behaviors that are associated with leadership success in modern organizations. First, a successful leader acts promptly once a problem has been identified and its character diagnosed. Equally important to leadership success within this context is that a leader should not act in a precipitous manner. Second, subordinate managers who do not actively support a leader's program should be replaced quickly. Third, a leader should prioritize her or his time and adhere to the policy thus established. sideration of the traits required by successful leader is the need for leadership vision. Walman and Yammarino (1999) also pointed out the importance of the charismatic leader who is capable of transforming an organization.
Transformational leadership is comprised of four components. These components are (1) idealized influence, (2) inspiration, (3) intellectual stimulation, and (4) individualized consideration. Idealized influence (charisma) is a process whereby the leader provides subordinates with a vision and a sense of mission and gains respect, trust, and confidence from subordinates. Inspirational leaders build the confidence of their subordinates, thereby influencing their ability to perform assignments and tasks successfully. Transformational leaders use inspiration to increase optimism and enthusiasm of subordinates and to articulate the leader's vision. Intellectual stimulation is a process whereby the leader increases subordinate awareness of problems and influences subordinates to view problems from a new perspective. Individualized consideration includes providing support, encouragement, and developmental experiences for subordinates (Bass & Steidmeier, 1999).
Cultural diversity also is relevant to leaders
