The counselor must act in accordance with this code and take precautions to ensure the confidentiality of the information as it is transmitted to the affected parties; use of telephones, answering machines, and other equipment must be guarded to maintain confidentiality as much as possible. In addition to these issues, code B.4.b. Couples and Family Counseling is relevant. The counselor may want to introduce couple counseling in this case since the husband is involved, and in either case the counselor will need to establish limitations of confidentiality to each party. However, in this instance, the counselor will need to defer to section B.2.a. regarding danger issues.

2. Six Basic Moral Principles are applied to the case scenario. The two principles most difficult to be mindful of in a counseling relationship and why, are discussed. The six basic moral principles are: autonomy, nonmaleficience, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity.

Autonomy refers to the promotion of self-determination or freedom to allow a client to select their own direction. For this case example, the counselor must promote the client's freedom to select her own direction, but on the other hand the direction chosen is one of self-destructive behaviors and dangers to others.
