. This sense of structure implies closure, coherence and totalization. The implication within this discourse system is that one can arrive at an answer regarding the issue at hand. The fact that the sound "cat" is assumed to have a direct reference to an actual cat implies that the statement "Truth is beauty" has a direct and explicable meaning as well. Words correlate directly to thought.

Derrida, however, attacks this view. He asserts that the connection between sign and signified is totally arbitrary. As an example, one can look at the word "cat." When one seeks to identify what a cat is, one turns to other words. It is furry, feline, and has retractable claws. Yet one must also define what is meant by the series of words used to describe the cat. What is meant by "furry"? In other words, the whole Aristotelian construct of defining a cat is caught up in the infinite regression of the signifier as trope.
