Lands' End has decided that it will not participate in traditional retailing in that it does not have a "brick and mortar" facility for customers. L. L. Bean also does not engage in retail stores but instead relies on a catalog business which is very similar to Lands' End in that the catalog has a lot of copy and uses "regular" looking people as models.

Eddie Bauer has put considerable resources behind traditional retailing in addition to its catalog operation. A division of mail order giant Spiegel, Eddie Bauer uses attractive models in exotic (or at least interesting) settings, which reinforces the idea that consumers who purchase Eddie Bauer products will look like or live like the images portrayed in the catalog.
