Knowledge workers, according to Davenport, both create and use knowledge. Knowledge creators are those workers who are innovators and develop new ideas and new products. Knowledge users are those workers who rely on new knowledge to perform their tasks. To some extent, all workers are knowledge workers, including pizza makers, but Davenport limits his definition of knowledge worker to those individuals who have a high proportion of knowledge activity in their jobs. Knowledge workers tend to be self-motivated, and to seek greater autonomy in their jobs than traditional workers.
