Kenyon writes concerning heutagogy, the study of self-determined learning, a style of approaching information and processes that springs from the heart of the learner, contrary to the traditional teacher-learner relationship in which the instructor imparts information to the student (Kenyon n.d., p.2). According to Kenyon, who is a wing commander of the RAAF, we live in a rapidly changing world in which former methods of training and education are completely inadequate; what is needed is a modern organizational structure that provides immediate learning with an interdisciplinary approach, including the following aspects of heutagogy:
Teachers cannot directly teach. They only facilitate learning.
People learn significantly when they perceive the learning to enhance themselves.
Educational institutions tend to resist experience-centered learning because of denial and substitution of symbols. There are rigid structures, which are threatened by change.
The learner has to be relaxed in order to learn.
