School Violence Research Design

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Review of the Study Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the study analyzed variations in the frequency and severity of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students (as dependent variables) at schools with and without requirements that students wear prescribed clothing (uniforms) while attending school (as an independent variable). Second, the study analyzed student perceptions of safety within the school environment and school-related environments (as a dependent variable) in relation to three factors (as independent variables). The three independent variables measured in the analysis of student perceptions of safety were as follows: (1) schools with and without requirements that students wear prescribed clothing (uniforms) while attending school; (2) the frequency of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students occurring in the school environment and in school-related environments; and (3) the severity of violent behavior by students in the school environment and in school-related environments.

In relation to the purposes stated above, the study investigated five research questions. These research questions were as follows:

1. Does the frequency of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students in the school environment and in school-related environments vary in relation to school requirements, if any, concerning the wearing of prescribed dress (uniforms) at school?

2. Does the frequency of severe viol

y in relation to variations in the frequency of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students at school? The null hypothesis tested in relation to this research question was as follows: Student perceptions of safety do not vary in relation the rate per 100 students enrolled of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students. The mean overall score of student perceptions of safety at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School was 20.2 (maximum possible score was 25.0 and lowest possible score was 5.0). The mean overall score of student perceptions of safety at Sara Cobb Elementary School was 17.4. The regression analysis of the individual student perceptions of safety scores and the rate per 100 students enrolled of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students yielded the value R = .355. The R2 = .126 value (the coefficient of determination) indicated that the rate per 100 students enrolled of violent and otherwise disruptive behaviors by students explained 12.6 percent of the variations in student perceptions of safety scores. The overall relationship between the dependent and independent variables and the regression coefficients were statistically significant at p .0001. Tables 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5 su
