Overview of Ayurvedic Medicine

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Ayurveda treats man as a whole, comprising body, mind, and soul. Mind and body both affect each other and together form the seat of disease. The approach of Ayurveda from the very beginning is psychosomatic. Ayurveda groups all human beings into seven different types of constitutions (Prakriti) according to the predominance of biological humors (Doshas), and similarly groups them into seven psychological constitutions according to the predominance of mental humors. (Ranade, 1994)

Ayurveda is considered, of holistic healing systems, to be the most comprehensive. It is a very ancient system, derived from The Vedas, the oldest and by religious standards often considered the most sacred written record of religious thought and scientific wisdom. The principle concepts of Ayurvedic medicine are contained within the Rig Veda, the oldest of the The Vedas.

The medical material and concepts of the Vedas eventually were collected, rigidly tested and arranged for readability and ease of use. These volumes were named The Samhitas as a collective unit. A pitta or fire predominant pulse is described as resembling the jerky movement of a frog, a sparrow or a crow. Since these are generally a jerky or jumpy movement, it can indicate insomnia, diarrhea, vertigo, hypertension, and heat of the skin, palms, soles and burning eyes. A kapha or water predominant pulse is described as the movement of a swan, cock or peacock. This is generally a slow pulse and indicates the presence of phlegm coughs, a melancholic disposition, etc. (Tierra L.ac, O.M.D., 2001). Pitham is linked distinctively to bodily changes involving destruction/metabolism. All of the constructive processes are performed by Karpam. It is herein that we insert a slight physics lesson in order to understand the ancient view of medicine as practiced by the Siddha: The universe consists of two essential entities, matter and energy. The Siddhas call them Siva (male) and Shakti (female, creation). Matter cannot exist without energy inherent in it and vice versa. The two co-exist and are inseparable. They are primordial elements Bhutas, not to be confused with modern chemistry. Their names are Munn (soli
