INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE: ANALYSIS OF A COMMUNICATION PROBLEMThis paper analyzes an intercultural communications problem in the workplace in the United States. The results of the analysis are presented in three discussions. The first discussion describes the communications problem, which the second discussion diagnoses the communications problem, and the third discussion suggests strategies for dealing with the communications problem. Description of the Communications Issue At an American subsidiary of the Japanese firm Sanyo, the Japanese company through its Japanese managers at the American subsidiary was willing to provide many benefits to workers that are not ordinarily provided by American firms. In return, however, the Japanese company, again through its Japanese managers at the American subsidiary, expected both commitment and sacrifice on the part of workers to provide both superior productivity and superior product quality. At Sanyo's American subsidiary, however, the American workers and their labor union balked at such commitment and sacrifice on the part of workers. The Japanese managers at the company's American subsidiary contended that all that the American workers want is the opportunity to work eights hours a day and collect pay for eight hours of work.
