Barford, J.A. (1997, July), Balance or bias? Information Selection for the Researcher, Internet Research, 53-58.

Barford suggests that all communication on the Internet is textual and the people communicating are invisible to each other. This means that communication is very different to that which takes place on a face-to-face level.

The implications of this are such that the ways in which people communicate, relate to each other and fuse together in relationships are altered. While these implications have been investigated on a larger scale, looking at issues of community the same implications must be looked at on an interpersonal level.

In her view, new technologies which have the potential to reshape communication are, nevertheless, always introduced into social contexts with existing forms of human relationships, values and meanings.

The danger in WWW and Internet analysis is to slip into the mistake of searching for what Freud called a Weltanschauung (an intellectual construct or conceit which claims to solves all the problems of existence uniformly on the basis of one answer).

She also takes issue with the error of naming the WWW as the marketing paradigm that will rule Electronic Commerce in the next century must be avoided at all costs. A cognitive, rather than a behavioral approach, seems to be as enlightening as the other theories of marketing that have guided business case studies in the recent past.
