that what is currently called school reform, will ruin the schools, particularly the standards and accountability movement of the past 10 years (Lindsay, 2000). His rationale is that teaching and learning cannot be judged by a single measure, especially something as "crude" as a standardized test which does not reveal a student's creativity, ingenuity, effort and other intangibles (Lindsay, 2000). Kohn contends that school reform should create classrooms that are about understanding ideas, rather then just the acquisition of disconnected skills that can be tested. He believes that this will motivate students to become lifelong learners, which should be a major goal of the educational system.

Darling-Hammond (1998) is in favor of reform centered on teacher learning that supports student learning.
