Overview of Pathophysiology

ence of a disease

-morbidity - number of people in a population with a specific disease

-mortality - number of deaths in a given population from a specific disease

-risk factors - factors making a person likely to get a particular disease

-the natural history of diseases - how the disease occurs in nature

You will be able to compare the Framingham Study of heart disease and the Nurse's Health Study, which examines chronic diseases in women as to purpose, years studied, and findings related to the determination of risk factors (Dawes, 2000; The Framingham, 2004).

You will be able to differentiate between primary (preventing occurrence of injury, disease), secondary (early detection and intervention in disease process) and tertiary levels of prevention (treatment to lessen disease effects and prevent further deterioration), and be able to give examples of each (Promotion, 2004).

Part B: Concepts of Altered Health in Children.

The second part of this lesson deals with health concerns in children, beginning with the newborn, and proceeding all the way through adolescence.

When you have completed this lesson, you will be able to describe the terms low birth weight, small for gestational age (gestational age is the age from conception to birth), and large for its gestational age.

You will be able to describe common health problems that can occur at birth such as birth distress, birth injuries, and congenital malformations, e.g. spina bifida, hydrocephalus, or cleft palate When, 2004; Birth, 2004). You will be able to differentiate between health problems associated with premature infants, e.g. respiratory distress syndrome due to lack of surfactant in the lungs, apnea (temporary cessation of breathing) and bradycardia (slow heart rate), and jaundice, and those of full term infants.

You will be able to describe the growth and development, and the common health problems found in early ch...
