One prominent theme in Bishop Spong's book is his insistence that Christians re-think some of the basic dogma of Christianity such as its condemnation of homosexuality. Spong's goal is to modernize the Christian church, and to make its theology consistent with modern science; and more specifically modern science as it relates to the underlying causes of homosexuality and the acceptance in the mainstream medical and psychological community that homosexuality should not be classified as an illness or psychological abnornality. He believes that many western religions have lost credibility in the world as a reflection of God's love because of intolerance.
