suggests that some people are born homosexual. This can be argued from several different perspectives, the most obvious being nature vs. nurture. Some people may be born homosexual and there seems little reason to disagree. For others, experimentation with homosexuality may be caused by curiosity, trauma, such as a lack of love in the home or a dysfunctional family life. I believe that some homosexuals may be the victims of child sexual abuse. I believe that other homosexuals are the product of a childhood devoid of love and affection and that these childhood traumas sometimes lead to a rejection of heterosexual relationships in favor of homosexual relationships, which historically have been more transitory and less permanent. My main issue with Spong's book is that he ignores the possibility that homosexuality may have a variety of inter-related and overlapping causes. For example, it may have a genetic basis, and a biochemical basis, and a psychological basis -- and for some it may be a defense mechanism. If homosexuality does involve a variety of determining factors, then the impact and the interrelationships between each of these factors will and must be different for every person.

Spong's writing has generated a significant amount of controversy, specifically over the interpretation of God's word regarding homosexuality. I feel that God has created humanity and we contain flaws. I do not pretend to know if homosexuality is a flaw. I know that this issue will continue to be debated in political and religious circles. Currently, there is a lot discussion about the issue of gay marriage and the appointing of openly gay ministers and bishops. Like Spong, I believe that God is not sitting up above judging us based on our sexual preference. I believe people should be judged on their faith and their actions.
