CLUB MED AND SINGAPORE AIRPLINES

shops are not included in the single price.

Club Med operates three different types of villages. The lowest priced and those with fewest amenities are the Hut Villages. Typically, these villages operate only in the summer months, and are the oldest of the facilities owned by Club Med. The other village types are Bungalow Villages, and Hotel Villages, which are characterized by greater amenity levels, and higher prices.

The market niche sought by Club Med is the provision of a single vacation packagelodging, meals, activities, and transportation. Until the mid1980s, Club Med had this market niche virtually to itself. Club Med attempts to insure that guests to its vacation villages have no concerns other than relaxing and enjoying themselves.

SIA began as a part of the Malaysian Airlines System, in 1947, when Malaya became a politically independent country. SIA was formed as a separate entity in 1972, when Singapore became a separate country from Malaya. Essentially, SIA received the international business of the Malayan Airlines System, while Malaya kept the domestic services.

In the highly competitive international air passenger business, SIA has sought a niche by catering to travelers who desire high levels of personal and courteous service. The airline has sought to create this niche through a combination of service quality and image creation. The stereotypical "Singapore girl" image has been used by SIA to equate a public perception that SIA represents high quality service.

In the context of market niche, SIA and Club Med are similar in that they both cater to a customer group that appreciates having almost everything done for them. Club Med wants its guests to feel that they have no concerns other than relaxing and enjoying themselves, while SIA attempts to assure its patrons that they will be denied no reasonable request for service.
