Another type of program which may be found to affect retention of good teachers in inner city schools is the teacher internship or apprentice program which provides teachers with extra experience in student teaching beyond that offered by their regular college or university. Hale (1992) has discussed one such program offered by the University of Toronto in Ontario Canada. According to Hale, year after year the Faculty of Education at the university noted that they were receiving applications from potential teachers with excellent profiles but who lacked teaching experience.

These applicants were considered candidates for the university's Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP), offered as an alternative teacher education program. Those selected to receive the program are placed in regular classrooms to gain experience and attend several compulsory inservice sessions.
