The news might like to think it is separate from this view, but it seems clear that it is not and that decisions are made about the news in keeping with the desire for ratings and for selling products to consumes. Advertising is the lifeblood of television, and all decisions are based on garnering the largest number of viewers to sell them products. Standardization is necessary first to attract this large number and second to avoid any controversy that might divide that viewership. This is why many see it as impossible to criticize society in the popular culture--television would be attacking itself.
