ry 1992. International donors have been reluctant to come up with the funding. After much prodding, Germany has come up with US$ 175 M, the U.S.A. with US$ 5 M, and Great Britain with US$ 2.5 M. The G-7 donor countries have prohibited the World Bank from administering the funding and insisted that it be left under their supervision. Implementation of the Amazonia project is expected to cost about US$ 1.5 billions over 5 years. The Brazilian daily O Globo complains that most countries keep criticizing Brazil.

The big problem in Brazil is inflation. Since President Fernando Collor de Mello took over the reins of the country, inflation has been more or less contained. On 5 November 1991, the Economic Minister Marcflio Marques Moreira told Congressmen that he did not expect inflation to come down to 'tolerable' levels until half-way through 1992. Until then, Brazilian could expect high rates of inflation and indexation (Latin American Weekly Report, 4).
