Ground Water Contamination: A Conceptual Context

The three primary origins of ground water contamination are urban living, industrial operations, and agricultural activities (Council on Environmental Quality, and the United States Department of State, 1982, pp. 340343). Urban living creates ground water contamination primarily through the use of water as a medium for carrying sewage effluent, and the subsequent return of the water to the supply pool. Water may be returned to the supply pool directly when it is treated in a water purification plant and then shunted back to the supply pool. Both treated and untreated water may be discharged into streams, lakes, or terrain, wherein topographic and geologic characteristics determine both how much of and how soon the water is returned to the supply pool.
