On the other hand, Farley and Akridge (1987) feel that interpersonal effectiveness refers to the degree to which one acts assertively in interpersonal situations; while Wolf and Schultz (1981) state that interpersonal effectiveness can be defined by the degree of positiveness in one's self-concept and his or her attitude toward others.

Thomas et al. (1986) agreed that oral communication skills were the pivotal component of interpersonal skills effectiveness but focused not only on the skills of one party (e.g. the supervisor or other person in charge) but rather on the degree of oral communication skills possessed by each party in the communication. In other words, at minimum, the dyad (sender and receiver) that comprises a given oral communication must be considered as a determinant of interpersonal skills effectiveness.

What needs to be seen here is that Thomas and his associates were emphasizing the interactive nature of interpersonal skill effectiveness, an emphasis that was echoed by Bozik (1982) and Grastie (1980). Indeed, these authors assert
