The resentment against the country's Asians is but a small part of the ethnic problems which exist within Kenya. Tribalism is strong in Kenya,11 and it is at the root of much of the political disharmony which exists.12

Ethnicity, tribalism, and regionalism are closely related in Kenya, because the ethnic groups, or tribes, continue to be largely concentrated in those areas of the country in which they originated. There are five major African ethnic groups represented in the Kenyan populationKikuyu (21 percent of the population), Luhya (14 percent), Luo (13 percent), Kamba (11 percent), and Kelenjin (11 percent).
