Rousseau's views on the education of children

. Such home schooling could lead to individuals who think for themselves, who might well decide that the State whose policies Rousseau favors and represents is unjust and evil and should even be overthrown through revolution. Clearly, for Rousseau, the education of the children in the state should be carried out in a uniform way which produces not independent thinkers but conforming patriots who put the needs of the state before their own needs or the needs of their family. In arguing these points, Rousseau twists the meanings of words to fit his propaganda needs:

There can be no patriotism without liberty, no liberty without virtue, no virtue without citizens; create citizens, and you have everything you need; without them, you will have nothing but debased slaves, from the rulers of the State downwards (Rousseau).

According to Rousseau, then, if the state does not "create citizens" (patriots), then the state will be full of slaves. This is nonsense. If a man
