The filmÆs anti-hero, Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is trapped in a dark, violent urban world from which he cannot escape. Small time American hustler Fabian has come to London to make it big in post-war England so he can ôlive a life of ease and comfort.ö He comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme that backfires in spite of his ruthless scheming and manipulative efforts. He decides to become the major wrestling promoter in LondonÆs gritty, violent wrestling scene, but his schemes miscarry and he finds himself the object of a manhunt that ends in his violent death.
