ees, and one employee held a master's degree.

Finally, length of time on the job also was quite variable ranging from no more than three months up to 20 years and nine months. The median amount of time spent on the job was 6.17 years with a mean of 7.37 years and a standard deviation of 6.23 years.

Results Observed For Tests of Research Hypotheses

Marital Status and Income Dependency (Test of Hypothesis 1)

The study's first research hypothesis predicted that marital status would be observed to be "neutrally related" (unrelated) to income dependency (measured in terms of the degree of one's financial worries and feelings that they needed the income from their particular jobs). Due to the fact that marital status was nominally measured, it was not possible to utilize the common pearson r statistic to examine for a correlation between these variables. Therefore, the selected statistic was Eta designed for use in examinations for a statistical relationship between two variables when one of the variables is nominally or categorically measured (Linton & Gallo, 1975).

The Eta correlation statistic used to examine for association between marital status and income dependency was not observed to be significant (Eta = .23; df=1,8; p>.05). In other words, there was not systematic association between the degree to which the employee had financial worries and felt dependent upon the income earned from his/her particular job and the variable of marital status. Since the study's hypothesis was a null thesis predicted that there would be a lack of relationship between marital status and income dependency, the findings can be said to support this hypothesis.

Job Stability of Working Spouse and Income Dependency (Test of Hypothesis 2)

The study's second research hypothesis stated that marriage to a working spouse with job stability would be negatively related to income dependency. This hypothesis was tested using the correl...
