Yet no matter how unique or specific the vision may be seen and communicated, there will inevitably be some who do not share it. An effective leader must persevere in the face of such obstacles in order to bring the vision to fruition. Not only must the pastor serve as spiritual leader for the congregation, but his concept of ministry must be broad enough to include the managerial elements inherent in operating the church as a "business"--it is daily concerned with the upkeep of grounds and facilities, the financial affairs must be tended to, staff must be directed, and the committee structure must be kept organized (Callahan, 42). Despite the obvious conflict with one's scriptural understanding of the nature of the church, this is a necessary element of church life in the United States.

The present issue confronting First Church of Woodside concerns the coming availability of four acres of land adjoining the present campus. The trustees believe that purchasing the land will benefit the church, but others are not so confident. They all recognize that people don't attend a church simply because it has the newest, largest sanctuary and parking lot--there has to be more. What role is the pastor to play?

Shawchuck and Heuser describe the life cycle of church congregations (157-163), complete with the analogy of organizations as machinery: they wear out, become less effective, and eventually cease to exist (157), or that of humanity: they are born, grow and age, and are destined to die (159).
