n regular staff were unavailable. She told me that her supervisor did not like to put her on the desk, though, because it was work reserved for the library technical assistants.

Denise explained the library pecking order to me. Because she was just a student worker who would probably leave shortly, the full-time veterans didn't put much stock in her. She wanted more responsibility, and was fully capable of handling it, but the supervisor insisted that she mainly stick to shelving books. She had been working 15 hours per week for the past seven months. She liked the added income, and stated that she was saving none of it.

Denise said that working cut into her social life, but she didn't mind, because she didn't have much of one to begin with. She was in the school band, which met the last period of every day, so that aspect of her school day seemed to satisfy her social requirement. In addition, she inevitably would run into people she knew while working evenings in the library. Denise said that her money was her own to keep, since working was a personal choice and not a necessity. Because she is confident that she will be able to get student loans next year, she doesn't feel the need to save money for college.

Josh cleaned up the interiors and exteriors of cars that had been in the dealership's shop. He started work in regular high school, was bombing out grade-wise, and started to get into some heavy drinking and pot smoking.
