Indeed, in many of the stories discussed, the characters display male domination and female docility first in terms of the roles they have in society. The males have jobs and a place in the community, while the females tend the home and raise the children, with little thought of venturing into the public world. The dominant political pattern, with a male ruler determining the fate of his subjects, is repeated in the household, with the dominant male guiding the household and the wife and children following. In the anonymously written Chinese story "The Canary Murders," the husband ventures forth seeking justice while the wife, though she discusses the matter with him and they decide together, remains at home.
