Once a deign has been selected, it becomes necessary for the researchers to consider myriad other issues ranging from selecting a sample, identifying or developing appropriate data collection procedures and instruments, analyzing the data that is collected in a statistical or narrative manner, and producing appropriate text, charts, tables, and figures that illuminate findings (Leedy & Ormrod, 2001).
It is the purpose of this research project to first, discuss the major themes presented in a text titled Practical Research: Planning and Design, created by Leedy and Ormrod (2001). This text is a comprehensive presentation of the fundamentals of formal research, qualitative research methodologies, quantitative research methodologies, and strategies for preparing research reports. The next section of this report will offer a detailed discussion of the major themes introduced by Leedy and Ormrod (2001), incorporating a comparison of issues and strategies presented by these researchers to those articulated by others who have also explored the varieties of formal research that are available.
Following this textual analysis and assessment, the project will move to an application of one of the research methods discussed by Leedy and Ormrod (2001) to the writerÆs own field of expertise. This field of expertise, the pharmaceutical industry, will be examined from the methodological perspective of qualitative research, described by Leedy and Ormrod (2001) as encompassing a case study design. This necessitates the collection of extensive data and the use of secondary or previously published statistical findings.
