Screenplay Presentation: An Analysis
No Future for You is a screenplay set in Florence, Italy, which centers on the ambitions of a young man, Haven, a 22-year-old American, who wishes to become a paparazzo. In the belief that he is apprenticing for a well-known Italian paparazzo named Giovani Vasari, Haven stalks and photographs a young female opera diva named Adriana Catalani. In the process, he uncovers a plot by the singerÆs husband to have her killed; his efforts thwart the murder attempt, and it is revealed that Vasari is the singerÆs father; Vasari has been using Haven to protect his daughter from harm, and in the process has created a paparazzo likely to rival himself. Set in Florence, the film unfolds in a cafT, on the streets of the city, at the opera house, and back to the city streets. Central to the entire story is the omnipresent Piazza Michelangelo, in which crowd noises, an Italian flag, pigeons or other birds, and a howling wind provide background noise.
Both interior and exterior scenes must be filmed. This necessitates scouting to find: 1) a ôtypicalöÆ Florentine cafT with exterior, sidewalk tables; 2) interiors of the opera house and its dressing rooms and backstage areas, complete with an exterior window through which Haven can film Adriana; 3) appropriate public spaces, including a square or piazza, complete with background crowds, birds, and moving vehicles (including scooters that are ubiquitous in Italy); and 4) a restaurant interior. Each of these settings must be decorated appropriately, with props indicative of the locale. For example, the exterior cafT scene must be filled with small metal tables and chairs, perhaps with scattered umbrellas, as well as seated customers, waiters moving to deliver food and beverages, and so forth.
The background for each scene is also significant. The cafT exterior, for example, must be positioned against a square filled with tourists, locals, indiv...
