The senses can deceive the individual both during his or her waking and sleeping hours. Dreams can give the sleeper the mistaken belief that he is awake and is actually going through a waking experience.
An experience I had recently reminded me that my own senses can deceive me. I was in a tall building overlooking a large highway. There were terrible squeals of brakes and sounds of cars crashing outside. I rushed to the window and looked out. I believed that I saw at least seven or eight cars which were in various stages of damage from the accident.
The amount of squealing brakes and skidding cars and crashing metal I had heard led me to believe---before I ever looked out the window---that there were a great number of cars which had been involved in the accident. Therefore, when I looked out, my eyes told me that all the cars which were stopped on the road had been involved directly in the accident,
