Lukacs says that the essence of commodity-structure is found in the fact that a relation between people takes on the character of a thing and so acquires a "phantom objectivity," or an autonomy that seems to be so strictly rational and all-embracing as to conceal every trace of its fundamental nature, which is the relation between people. Lukacs has the intention of basing his discussion on Marx's economic analyses and proceeding from there to discuss the problems that grow out of the fetish character of commodities.
