The first Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) in the world to be dedicated and run on a fully commercial basis is at the Central Science Laboratory at Sand Hutton, York, in northern England (Speeding). The AMS is operated by the Center for Biomedical Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, a subsidiary company of the University of York, and will be used to identify promising drugs that could lead to life-saving cures and speed up drug development, shortening times by up to six months. It is well-suited for testing small samples of very powerful drugs. The AMS already has attracted contracts from drug companies such as Pfizer, Novartis, Glaxo Welcome, and Janssen Pharmaceutica. The AMS technique, which is used in carbon dating as well as in biomedical research, is between 100,000 and 1,000,000 times more sensitive than traditional methods.
