In the far northwest, in the Darfur region, stands another cluster of mountains, and others are located in the savanna belt.

Sudan lies wholly within the tropics so has a tropical climate (Geography). A large part of the country is influenced by the trade winds, leading to hot, rainy summers and warm, dry winters. Rainfall varies from the dry north with an average rainfall of only 25 mm to the south, with up to 1500 mm. The rainy season usually extends from July to September, with the south also experiencing rainfall in May and June. Monsoon rains fall in October and November in the Red Sea Hills, but there is little rain in the drier northern and central regions, and this falls mainly in July and August. The northern part of the country experiences severe sandstorms between April and October.
