The law recognizes the rights and interests of the family of a patient and authorizes them to make decisions for a patient who is unable to give consent for themselves (Death). If no advance directive is available, the doctor is required to explain to the relatives all the relevant medical information about the patient and explain to the surrogate decision-maker that decisions regarding withdrawing or withholding treatment are to be based on knowledge of the patientÆs preferences, their attitudes towards sickness and suffering, medical procedures, and death. If there is no adequate evidence of the patientÆs preferences, the decisions should be made based on the best interests of the patient (what would most likely promote the patientÆs well-being).
