Psychosocial Profile of John Gotti

This paper is a psychosocial examination of the "Teflon Don," mobster John Gotti. Genetic and environmental influences that encouraged him to seek a life of crime also predisposed him to develop a personality that considered such a life an acceptable choice. His early history shows ample evidence of conduct disorder, the precursor to the development of antisocial personality disorder. This disorder is a classic pattern in criminals; often, a criminal record is one of the indicators of the presence of the disorder. While treatment is usually difficult and complicated, it can be achievable when the patient can be isolated and treated directly. Gotti's current incarceration, serving a life sentence, may actually represent his only real hope for the transition to a more normal existence, although the lack of psychosocial treatment accompanying his imprisonment makes such recovery unlikely.

Psychosocial theory argues that personality and personality disorders are formed by a complex combination of biological factors and environmental influences. John, along with his brothers, Peter, Gene, Vincent, and Richard, all chose a life of crime. John was the fifth child, born on October 27, 1940, in the Italian Harlem tenements of the South Bronx. ...
