Psychosocial Profile of John Gotti

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This paper is a psychosocial examination of the "Teflon Don," mobster John Gotti. Genetic and environmental influences that encouraged him to seek a life of crime also predisposed him to develop a personality that considered such a life an acceptable choice. His early history shows ample evidence of conduct disorder, the precursor to the development of antisocial personality disorder. This disorder is a classic pattern in criminals; often, a criminal record is one of the indicators of the presence of the disorder. While treatment is usually difficult and complicated, it can be achievable when the patient can be isolated and treated directly. Gotti's current incarceration, serving a life sentence, may actually represent his only real hope for the transition to a more normal existence, although the lack of psychosocial treatment accompanying his imprisonment makes such recovery unlikely.

Psychosocial theory argues that personality and personality disorders are formed by a complex combination of biological factors and environmental influences. Social forces influence the initial genetic codes. For this reason, siblings within one family may develop very different personalities, depending on their original biological gifts (or lack thereof) and the ways in which the forces around them mold those gifts. The case of John Gotti presents an interesting case. All five of the Gotti brothers chose criminal careers, but only John became a spectacular success, rising to the to

onning others for profit or pleasure. Gotti derived both from his activities. His success was founded on his ability to deceive other people, including his family and his associates. The elaborate measures he employed in planning and carrying out the execution of Gambino mob boss Paul Castellano, forming the group he called The Fist (Bardsley, johnmain, 1998, p. 2), would have made Machiavelli proud. The assassination plan required absolute secrecy and complete deception, as Gotti continued to pretend to Castellano's most trusted associate until the moment the first bullet was fired. The third criteria is impulsivity or the failure to plan ahead. Despite Gotti's remarkable ability to work out elaborate schemes to accomplish his goals, he also demonstrates a rashly impetuous streak that accounts for his time behind bars. When federal officials first began bugging his hangouts, he seemed to sense his listeners and provided little useful information. Yet he later threw caution to the wind, glibly bragging about murders he had ordered and crimes he had carried out. Many of his most daring plans were actually a combination of careful deliberation and wild improvisation, impulsive behavior that finally gave the police enough e
