His trial and execution created considerable media interest, as had the murders he committed:

His trial was marked by a lot of pomp and arrogance on his own part, and the media and public ate it up. He went out with a bang in 1989 when he was at long last executed by electrocution. Now, 11 years after his death, Ted Bundy is still something of a morbid fascination to many, and countless studies have been done on this man by socalled experts, and millions of dollars have been made off of him ("The Forgotten Victims of Ted Bundy," 2000).

As with most serial killers, the first mystery surrounding Bundy was his identity as bodies were found across the country; the second and more difficult mystery remains in the question, why did he turn into a killer? This is a question that occupies many authorities, psychiatrists, and other professionals, and ultimately there is no consensus on what forms a serial killer. There may indeed be different processes in different cases, but the very existence of such killers frightens us because we do not know how it happens and do not know how to stop it from happening in the future.

The first murder in the series was discovered on January 31, 1974, when a student at the University of Washington, in Seattle, Lynda Ann Healy, vanished from her room, leaving behind bloodstained bedsheets suggesting that she had been struck on the head. Three more girl students vanished in March, April, and May, and two more in June.
