Vandik offers a news schemata which will serve as an analytical tool for examining these two stories and their meanings. The first of the schemata is the headline, or main event. the headline for a newspaper story is an attention grabbing device, a way of guiding the eye of the reader to a given story by indicating some general outline of what the story is about. This story is about the previous day's game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. The writers of the headline in each case indicate the outcome of the game, though they do so in differing degrees. In the Salt Lake paper, the headline indicates that the cowboys were the winners without giving the score. The headline uses the word "demolish" to imply that the point spread is high in favor of the Cowboys: "Fighting Cowboys Demolish Giants." The headline also characterizes the Cowboys but not the Giants--they are them "Fighting Cowboys" here. Interestingly, the story in USA Today has a headline that characterizes the giants and not the Cowboys--they are the "floundering Giants," a shift in tone that shows either more concern for the Giants or more contempt, depending. This headline also includes the score, and the Cowboys in this case "rip" the Giants.
