E.A. Robinson's Poem Richard Cory

Richard Cory was a well-bred person, from the tips of his toes to the top of his hat. This man was smoothly handsome, as well as being as fit and trim as a prince.

Also Richard Cory consistently dressed in an unobtrusive but very good style. Also, every time he spoke to anyone he sounded just like any ordinary person. Yet, this would excite people, and it made their blood pressure jump when he would greet them in the early part of the day, he sparkled like a shiny substance when he went by.

In the last stanza, Cory disappears in the first two lines, and then, the narrator's report switches from personal observation and evaluation to hearsay. As one critic said, Robinson's poems proceed in an orderly manner, "while the narrator subtly assumes the point of view of the reader and imperceptibly helps him to assess and understand" (Coxe 24). At the end of this poem, the narrator abandons the reader to make whatever she / he can out of the fact of Cory's death. The opening lines of the poem state the basic action. Richard Cory would sometimes go down town and, when he did, he was noticed. The Random House Dictionary defines "down town" as, "the main business section of a city" (264). Cory, it seems, was a person who sometimes had a reason to go there. But, who is observing him? The choice of words is important here since "we people on the pavement" obviously refers to people who are usually in the area. But they are not businessmen or store owners -- those people would be inside. They are people from a lower class than Cory.
