Who the "players" are in this 20-years-hence scenario will be familiar. At the core will be the United States, the European Community, and Japan; these three powers will be competitors and will be in their positions for geographic, economic and military reasons. Geography will play the major role in the European Community's core placement, since the E.C. combines the majority of the world's industrialized nations under one umbrella, thereby giving it a strong economic position. Japan, as the number one industrialized nation in Asia, will retain its current position of core power into the future, probably in alliance with Taiwan, Korea and Singapore/Malaysia. The United States will have geography and military power as its ace cards. Geographically it serves as a natural buffer/market/middleman between the European Community and Japan; militarily, it will be convenient for both Japan and the European Community to support a strong U.S. economy in return for
