All of the demographic variables with one exception reflected a population that was dominantly lower socioeconomic in character. The single exception was formal educational attainment where 37 (35.9 percent) of the subjects reported formal educational attainment above the level of high school graduate. This anomaly may have been resulted from a misinterpretation of the language in the questionnaire item related to formal educational attainment. Because of this anomaly, however, subject level of formal educational attainment was not included in the analyses as a moderator variable.

Five age classifications were included in the survey questionnaire. Small cell distributions in relation to patient attitude and behavior relationships when controlled for age, however, dictated that the age classifications be reduced to three for purposes of analysis. The distribution of the sample by age in relation to these three classifications were as follows:

1. Under 25 years old: 27 subjects (26.2 percent).

2. 25-to-49 years old: 61 subjects (59.2 percent).

3. 50 years old and older: 15 subjects (14.6 percent).

Seven classifications of ethnic and racial background were included in the survey questionnaire. Small cell distributions in relation to patient attitude and behavior relationships when controlled for ethnic and racial background, however, dictated that the ethnic and racial background classifications be reduced to three for purposes of analysis. The distribution of the sample by ethnic and racial background in relation to these three classifications were as follows:

1. African-American: 34 subjects (33.0 percent).

2. Asian-American, white, and other: eight subjects (7.8 percent).
