Since most videos were provided free to MTV, some believed that exclusivity deals were designed to give MTV an edge over the other music programs. This agreement caused some other music video shows to alter their programming. Scott Sansa, then-producer of Night Tracks on WTBS, added more videos of songs that had not reached the top 30 by then, since he was unable to get many of the big artists' videos until they had already been on MTV for 30 days.

The music videos on MTV had a powerful affect on popular culture and its commercial promotions. Many bands, such as Duran Duran, Cindy Lauper, A-Ha, Bon Jovi and Poison, succeeded because of the heavy airplay of their videos on MTV. By 1984, only three albums on Billboard's top 100 did not have a video to go with them. Soon many songs were written with a video in mind.
